FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I’ve never used hair oil before. How do I apply it?

All Vedic Potion Hair Oils are a pre-shampoo deep-conditioning treatment. You can apply it to your hair while it’s dry approximately 4 to 8 hours before showering. If you have an oily scalp, you can reduce the time to 3 to 6 hours. If you have dry scalp, then you can leave it overnight and longer if desired.

How much oil should I apply to my hair/scalp?

It all depends on the length of your hair. Keep in mind a little goes a long way so you do not need to over saturate your hair. Short hair may need as less as 5 ml (1 tsp) of oil for scalp and hair.

Do you have a shampoo or conditioner recommendation that can be used along with your oils?

We do not have a brand recommendation for shampoo or conditioner but we do recommend investing in a pH balanced product. pH represents how acidic, alkaline, or neutral a solution is and is measured on a scale between 0 and 14. A solution between 0 to 6.9 is is considered acidic, between 7.1 to 14 is considered alkaline. and 7 is considered neutral. It is important to use pH-balanced shampoo because alkaline shampoos tend to strip too much sebum from the scalp. Sebum is a natural oil secreted by the sebaceous glands that helps prevent infection by protecting the skin from bacteria and fungus. That is why it is recommended to use a product that has a pH between 5 and 7 so that sebum is well balanced.

How do I choose what type of oil is best for me?

All Vedic Potion oils are good for hair but you should always choose the oil based on your hair/scalp type. A wrong choice may lead to your hair feeling too dry or too weighed down or flat or limp causing you to not want to use the oil any more. That’s why it is best to stick to the oil that works best for your hair/scalp type.

Can herbs in your oil change hair color?

Yes, herbs like curry leaf, amla, bhringraj are not recommended for blonde hair as they can cause a change of hair shade. Similarly herbs like henna, lemon peel, cinnamon can lighten hair shade although dark hair doesn’t get affected by it as much. If you don’t see a oil that fits your needs because of the shade of your hair, you can customize it by either sending us an email or filling out our customization form.

After oiling and shampooing, why does my scalp feel conditioned but my hair feels dry?

That might happen in situations if your scalp is oily but your hair is dry which is quite common in people who color their hair often or use a lot of chemical based products. You can either choose two different types of oil – one for scalp and other for hair or you can limit oiling only to your scalp as the oil meant for your scalp is not meant for your hair in this case. Other reason could be over washing/over shampooing that is stripping away your hair’s natural oils. Try to establish a baseline first in that case (oil, shampoo once, condition if your hair requires it) and alter this routine based on how your hair feels.
